90年代
Power noise来源于西班牙工业艺术Esplendor Geometrico，自1980年起活跃，其他如Le Syndicat的艺术家自1982年起活跃。比利时Dive集团也在90年代早期就预测到了这种风格会兴起，同时还推出了一些风格更硬或更苛刻的techno版本，如Aphex Twin的几款早期黑胶EP版本。Noisex的Raoul Roucka在1997年创造了“power noise”一词，并推出了曲目“United（power noise Movement）”。

这一流派曾被electro-industrial艺术家Wumpscut引入到美国industrial界，他让Mental Ulcer Forges唱片公司签下了Noisex。 最早的Power noise艺术家大多是德国人。除Noisex外，还包括Asche、Morgenstern、P·A·L、Synapscape和Feindflug。The Belgians Axiome， Hypnoskull， Imminent， Ah Cama-Sotz， Sonar， and This Morn' Omina也使这一流派得到了发展。澳大利亚人Black Lung和加拿大人Orphx在这一时期也很活跃。Merzbow， Aube， and Contagious Orgasm等日本音乐家也利用了它独特的节奏。

2000年代
在21世纪出现的著名的power noise艺术家包括Iszoloscope， Antigen Shift， Prospero， Drillbit， Tarmvred， Converter， Terrorfakt， Alter Der Ruine， Panzer Division， C/A/T和Xotox。

通常来讲power noise以从鼓发展而来的声音扭曲的踢踏鼓为基础，用乐器演奏，如Roland TR-909，并经常使用军队常用的4/4拍。有时会加入旋律，但通常是次要的节奏。Power noise音轨通常结构化，可以用来跳舞，但有时也抽象。这种风格在德国奥伯豪森一年一度的Maschinenfest音乐节以及加拿大蒙特利尔的Kinetik音乐节上都有展示。

一些乐团如Combichrist和Dulce Liquido会把aggrotech和power noise一起演奏。另外Tarmvred将power noise与breakcore相结合。其他的仍然融合了Endif 等IDM的元素。它也经常有与techno听起来非常相似的地方，但这些有时属于rhythmic noise 范畴，如90年代末/2000年代的Speedy J和像Uncivilized World这样的唱片公司发行曲。最近十年，techno中出现了更硬、更刺耳、更具实验性的声音，虽然这些声音与rhythmic noise有很多重合点，但这通常被称为industrial techno，而不是rhythmic noise或power noise，因为这两个风格通常互不交叉。举个例子，艺术家Ancient Methods（推动industrial techno重新受欢迎的艺术家之一）在发首张专辑时对P·A·L的 Gelöbnis进行了采样，后来还在Hands Productions发行了音乐，这是90年代开始推动rhythmic noise风格的首批唱片公司之一。其他风格比如breakcore和IDM中也一直存在并将继续存在风格重合。
